Engineering Insights

Frequently Asked Technical Questions

What is your maximum machining envelope on the CNC router?

Our standard machining envelope is 4 ft x 8 ft (1220 mm x 2440 mm), but our open-bed clearance design accommodates oversize stock up to 5 ft wide and continuous nested lengths for architectural panels and industrial structural frames.

When should I choose CNC machining over laser cutting for plastics?

CNC routing is ideal for engineering plastics that cannot be thermally laser-cut due to toxic gas release or melting (such as PVC, polycarbonate over 0.25", UHMW-PE, and carbon fiber), as well as parts requiring pocket depths, chamfers, countersinks, and threaded blind holes.

Can Lumicision tap threads and drill precision counterbored holes?

Yes. Our CNC centers perform multi-tool drilling, rigid tapping, countersinking, counterboring, and 3D surfacing in a single setup, delivering finished parts ready for final assembly.

Do you supply raw aluminum plates or can customers provide their own stock?

We offer both turnkey sourcing with comprehensive material test certificates (MTRs) and toll-machining on client-supplied sheet, plate, or extruded billet stock.
