Engineering FAQ

Technical & Procurement Questions

Direct answers from our senior laser applications engineers and quality inspectors.

Why is 316L stainless steel preferred over 304 for pharmaceutical cleanrooms and hospital sterile processing?

While 304 stainless steel is excellent for general hospital casework, 316L contains 2–3% molybdenum and low carbon (<0.03%). This prevents carbide precipitation during welding and provides superior resistance against pitting and crevice corrosion caused by aggressive sporicidal disinfectants, bleach, hydrogen peroxide vapor (VHP), and saline solutions.

How does automated and robotic laser welding improve cleanroom and hospital hygiene compared to TIG welding?

Conventional TIG welding introduces high heat input that warps thin stainless sheets and leaves wide, uneven weld beads requiring extensive grinding. Our automated and robotic fiber laser welding produces ultra-narrow, full-penetration, autogenous seams with minimal heat distortion and smooth, radiused profiles that eliminate microscopic crevices where bacteria or particulates could accumulate.

Can Lumicision engineer custom hospital and cleanroom equipment under a PEO Certificate of Authorization?

Yes. Lumicision holds an official Certificate of Authorization (C of A) from Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) alongside 9 years of ISO 9001:2015 certification. Our engineering team can design custom cleanroom workstations, structural equipment mounts, and pass-through chambers to your facility dimensions and load requirements.

How do you protect #4 brushed and mirror stainless finishes during laser cutting and press brake bending?

We process all architectural and sanitary stainless sheets with laser-safe protective PVC/PE film, cut with high-purity Nitrogen (N2) assist gas for zero edge oxidation, and form bends on our 200-ton CNC press brake using non-marking urethane bottom dies.
